Local Resident Goes to Jail!
Lesly Devereaux was found guilty in July of official misconduct. After that July jury trial and conviction, she then pleaded guilty in October to welfare and public records tampering charges.
Devereaux, 49, of Piscataway, has pleaded guilty to creating fake documents to mask her role in steering over $10,000 in NJ state contracts to her family.
She also acknowledged backdating two letters stating she had recused herself from negotiations involving consulting contracts for family members, though she actually took part in the talks.
She acknowledged applying for food stamps as a clerk-typist when she was actually a private-practice lawyer. She collected about six months worth of benefits for children living in her home.
Devereaux had earned $105,000 a year as chief of staff to William Watley, who was commerce secretary under then-Gov. James E. McGreevey. She resigned her state post in 2004 and was properly indicted in February 2005.
Superior Court Judge Maryann Bielamowicz has sentenced Devereaux to 6 1/2 years. Devereaux's attorney, Jack Furlong announced she will be eligible for a tightly controlled parole program after six months.
Furlong said she must also pay $29,000 in restitution.
He said Ms. Devereaux accepted responsibility for her actions and expressed regret for getting her family involved and that she was optimistic for a second chance.
"She said, 'I'm shackled but unbowed,'" Furlong said.
Ms. Devereaux, an attorney since 1989, was disbarred in December 2007
This adds up to more than 100 New Jersey public officials that have been convicted on public corruption charges during the past five years.
